Biography

IMG_6076.JPG

Caroline always wanted to create, draw or paint when growing up in Toronto. From grade school forward it was a prime interest. Art was her course guide studying commercial art, then mechanical drafting when no art course was available after a move to Clearwater, Florida. Awards both local and regional followed as she entered various art competitions.

After transferring with honours from The Ringling School of Art, Sarasota, Florida to graduate from the Interior Design program at the Ontario College of Art (OCAD). She began her career in the office and but after many client requests included residential consultations in her portfolio. In the evenings she continued her formal education as a part-time student at York University then continued at U of T, Scarborough Campus after moving to a rural village, with her husband, to raise their family and where she lives today.

Caroline’s creative acuity in Design gave her a life career. Her sense of style was evident in everything she undertook. It was not until later in her retirement that an opportunity emerged to enrol in summer courses at the Haliburton School of Art. This began the rediscovery of a forgotten latent talent and realization that she could paint again just as she rediscovered that painting for the sake of painting. With the ultimate in serendipity, Caroline participated in classes with premier art educators who were significantly instrumental in their encouragement of her direction and burgeoning style.

At the age of 72 she participated in a group exhibition Debut held at The Canadian Women’s Art Association. She has since continued to exhibit in various galleries in and around Toronto, Mississauga, Oshawa and Naples, Florida. Caroline paints throughout the year contributes to various charity auctions and has been accepted into numerous juried shows with acclaim and award. Filled with a passion for painting she is thrilled that her works are held in private collections that include both residential, commercial and office landscapes within Canada, the USA, Germany and beyond.

Artist Statement

As an Abstract Expressionist Painter my aim is for spontaneity in my work with its interpretation presented in a free and lively fashion. Distortion in exaggerated shapes with an exuberant use of strokes and colour are my main ingredients. The topic whether obvious or not comes from an inner feeling or an event. I paint in quiet solitude looking out over a stretch of rural landscape. I often have playing in the background not music but News Broadcasts to keep me connected to the world beyond my studio. This can lead to a local or more likely global event creeping into or even exploding upon my canvas. Though usually not obvious each painting has its story. I invite the viewer to find their own story within the art. Some paintings are completed in one long continuous session while others require numerous visits and evolve over time. Whether paper or canvas a painting may begin with a splash of colour, blocks of shapes or a surface covered in quotes, thoughts or words. Some paintings are best executed using a mixed media or collage method. Anything goes and mark making is never limited to only brushes. Annual workshops and studio classes keep the spirit glowing. Wonderfully engaging instructors are steadfast in giving inspiration and encouragement as do the energetic vibes of the artists they attract. I look forward to each next painting project, the pushing of one's own boundaries as well as pushing those of the viewer.
